JAN 17, 2019: NAIROBI: BARELY UP

The Nairobi  Securities  Exchange closed barely up on Thursday  January  17. 2019 although still very much on the crest of optimism. 

The All share index  closed the day at 145.01, up marginally by 0.25 points compared to 1.23 points rise on Wednesday. 

Significant  though  was the fact that the slight occurred  while Safaricom  eased by Ksh 0.05 per share amongst 16 price drops and 23 gains. 

Top  price gain was Jubilee  Holdings  Ksh 8 per share while recording  deals for only 1500 units. Jubilee  opened the day at previous  day's  Ksh423 per share,  hit day high of Ksh 460.25 before closing at Ksh 431 per share.

On its heels,  Limuru Tea  in the agricultural sector  up Ksh 4 per share to Ksh 554 per share after touching day  high of Ksh 555 and low of Ksh 545 per share compared  to Ksh 550 previously. 

Other major gains were Ksh 1.75 per share  recorded  by I & M Holdings,  Ksh 1.50 per share  increase  by Bamburi  Cement  and Sanlam's Ksh 1 per share gain. 

On the other hand,  Diamond Trust  Bank  led price decline  with Ksh 5.75 per share  drop. It closed the day at Ksh 146.75 per share compared  to Ksh 152.50 previously  after touching  day high of Ksh 151 and low of Ksh 145 per share. 

There wer other major price drops. Williamson Tea  she'd Ksh  2.75 per share and the duo  of Kapchorua Tea  and Standard Chartered Bank closed down by Ksh 2 per share  each. 

Trading was slower within the day.  A total  of 19.791m shares were traded in 1145 deals worth  Ksh 494.593m as against  997 deals for 23.324m shares valued at  Ksh  607.855m on Wednesday. 

The volume  and value  were more distributed this time around with 6 equities  recording  deals  for above 1m shares each. 

Safaricom  accounted for 5.577m shares traded for Ksh 132m or 26.7% of total at between  Ksh 23.55 and 24 per share. 

The banking sector accounted for Ksh 217.9m worth of shares or 44.05% led by KCB  Group  with deals for 3.793m worth Ksh 37.75 and 39.90 per share.

Other  banks with above  1m shares trade were Equity Group  in which 1.04m shares cut hands for Ksh 39.6m while gaining 1.33% per share  and Cooperative  Bank with deals  for 2.099m shares worth  Ksh 29m. 

Other major  trades were 2.165m shares exchanged in Ken Gen for Ksh 15m,  1.086m shares traded in Center Investment  for Ksh 35.8m while  gaining  7.68% per share  and Carbacid's 1.076m shares worth Ksh 10m exchanged while  losing 1.84% per share.
