NOV 17, 2018; LAST WEEK AT NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE

Last week ended Friday November 16, 2018 at the Nairobi stock market was very active in terms of both price discovery and trade.

Most of the discovered prices though were down on previous week's levels leading to 2.11 points or 1.44% drop in the All share index to 144.90 from 147.01 on previous Friday.

The week had started on a positive note with the ASI rising to 147.16 which was rather marginal but it turned out to be the last gain for week.

From this it closed at 146.78 on Tuesday, then dived some to 145.90 on Wednesday and Thursday's 144.92 before the Friday slight easing.

Margin of decline was bigger with British American Tobacco leading with Ksh 40 per share tumble it recorded on Thursday without any rally the next day.

It was trailed by the duo of Jubilee Holdings and Williamson Tea each down Ksh 7 per share.

The gainers were paced by Liberty Kenya as it closed up Ksh 5 per share on Friday after staying firm till then.

On the other hand, BOC Kenya followed with Ksh 3.50 per share rise for the week cumulated from Ksh 1.50 and 2 per share top up on Monday and Thursday respectively.

Both Unga Group and Total Kenya relatively more active price wise through the week. Unga recorded price changes each day of the week netting into Ksh 1.50 gain like Unga which had price changes in 4 days all upwards.

Traded volume rose by 32.1% to 82.153m shares from 62.171m shares driving traded value to Ksh 2.004bn , up 34.2% on previous Friday's  Ksh 1493.693m 

However, number of deals eased slightly to 4707, down 0.84%.

As usual Safaricom paced volume and value with 53.3m shares traded for Ksh 1.28bn at between Ksh 23.50 and 24.50 per share.

KENYA AUCTIONS Ksh 13.84bn Treasury Bonds.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) will from Tuesday December 18 to 27th 2018_ auction Ksh 13.84bn worth of fixed income Treasury Bonds with issue date December 17, 2018. According to official statement from the Director of Financial Markets Irene Njiru on Monday December 17, auction will continue throughout the stated period or close once the target money to be raised is reached, whichever comes first. Bid value will be paid for at most by 2pm December 31, 2018 while auction results will be made public on December 28, 2018 after the scheduled closing date. The bonds are being issued at 12.502% fixed interest at an adjusted average price of Ksh 100.468 for Ksh 100 bond. However, price payable after auction results publication will be average of successful bid prices based and allotment will be on first come first served basis. NAIROBI SE's HIGH PRICED EQUITIES.

In the wake of Nigeria's high priced quoted companies posted in this blog a while ago, Henates took a look to at Nairobi Securities Exchange June 23 official list to identify its high priced equities and the outcome was interesting too. Of the 66 companies quoted on the market by June 23, 15 or 22.7% were valued averagely at above 30 times nominal value. A word of caution though: There are two clear differences between the Nigerian stock market list and that of Nairobi: In the Nigerian one most listed companies have par or nominal value of N0.50 as is there is an implied agreement on this. On the other hand, at Nairobi most of the equities do not share common par value, they differ greatly.
