OCT 27, 2018: THE WEEK FOR THE FEW AT NIGERIAN STOCK EXCHANGE

Remember the  few controlling the most in an economy? Well, it played out clearly last week at the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

According to figures released by the exchange, there were 45 price losers and 26 gainers at the end of week when compared to previous week's close.

But you know what?  The All share index which attempts to reflect the overall impact of price changes in the market, closed up 0.2%, not down with the crowd of downward price changes.

It ended Friday October 26, at 32,907.33 compared to 32,841.69 the previous Friday. Sure, for two days within the week, (Wednesday and Thursday) it looked like the ASI was headed down but Friday rally by 1.11% put paid to that.

The bounce back Friday was paced by Dangote Cement up N10.5 or 5.74% as it closed at day high N211 per share but in the end, this helped to reduce net pressure the equity had been putting on ASI downwards.

Hence, top gainers for the week turned out to by Seplat Petroleum, up N29.90 per share, Total Nigeria N15 per share, Nestle Nigeria with N10 per share, Julius Berger up N2.15 per share and Zenith bank up N1.10 per share.

Of the top 5 gainers, only Julius Berger joined Dangote Cement in turning the table on Friday pointing to how the week would have ended for the ASI, had Dangote Cement closed firm or dropped on Friday.

The top losers were medium or low weighted equities and shed low margins to boot led by Beta Glass down N8.10 per share; La Farge Africa N2.75 per share, Guinness Nigeria N2.50 per share; CAP Plc down N1.45 and Flour Mills with N1.20 per share decline.

Guinness placed 3rd based on N3.60 or 4.47% decline on Friday while recording 35 deals for 1.392m shares and Nigerian Breweries failed to be amongst top gainers because it lost N4/5 or 4.86% also on Friday while witnessing 160 deals for 2.415m shares worth N216.580m.

In terms of trading activities, the previous week was high of course, but as it turned, last week was even better. Traded volume rose by 5.32% to 1453.858m shares from 1380.464m; valued at N15.263bn, up 0.77% on previous week's N15.147bn in 16,682 deals representing 23.6% rise on previous 13,498.

The relative leap in number of deals was also partly due to a Friday shot in the arm as Sterling Bank's 106.826m shares were offloaded accompanied with the usual scramble associated with the bank which resulted in leading 1274 deals worth N147.392m.

That placed Sterling Bank atop the week's top 5 by deals with 1965 deals followed by Zenith Bank (1508); FCMB (1061); FBN Holdings (897) and GTB with 753 deals.

In terms of volume, though, FCMB was the pace setter after its 2 day record offloads within the week, thus leading top 5 with 409.659m shares, followed by Access Bank with 144.316m shares, Sterling Bank (141.420m) GTB with 118.687m and Zenith bank (63.155m shares).

The top 5 by value was billions affair all through with GTB pacing with N4.332bn trailed by Nigerian Breweries with N1.953bn; Zenith Bank (N1.516 bn); Dangote Cement (N1.174bn) and Access Bank with N1.164bn.
