SEPT 15, 2018: LAST WEEK AT NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE

At the Nairobi stock market last week ended September 14, 2018, both traded volume and value increased but the All share index declined by 5.58 points or 3.41% to 158.13.

The all week drop in the ASI would have been higher but for Friday rally from 157.44 after daily slide that started on Monday.

The ASI had closed at 163.71 the previous week and dropped to 162.49 on Monday maintaining this direction daily up to Thursday.

Traded volume however, rose  by 22.5% to 89.317m shares from previous week's 72.928m but because more low equities were traded, the growth in traded value came to only 4.32% to Ksh 2.566bn from Ksh 2.459bn.

Friday trade paced both volume and value as 38.204m shares were sold for Ksh1.092bn followed in value terms by Ksh 388m on Monday and 23.954m shares on Thursday, in volume terms.

Both indicators were paced by Safaricom as 30.9m of its shares were traded for Ksh 824m which accounted for 31.64% of total value realised within the week.

Other top 5 volumes were recorded in KCB Group (14m); Barclay's bank (11.4m); Equity Group with 5.5m and Kenya Power and Lighting (4.6m).

The chart changed a bit on terms of value with KCB Group's 2nd place Ksh 582m was trailed by British American Tobacco with deals for just 447,000 worth Ksh 272m; Equity Group (Ksh 240m)  and East African Breweries in which just 917,000 shares were traded for Ksh 179m.

Total number of deals struck came with every day recording above 1000 to confirm still relatively high investors interest. 

Top number of deals though were struck on Tuesday (1285) followed by Friday with 1262 and Monday 1202.

Friday's leading volume was as Safaricom led traded volume with deals for 9.138m shares  followed by KCB with deals for 8.958m; and Barclay's (8.935m), 

Others with above 1m on the same day were Kenya Power & Lighting (2.478m shares); Cooperative Bank with 1.642m, Kenya Reinsurance (1.157m) and Centum Investments with deals for 1.094m.

Of the 917,000 units sold in East African Breweries, the bulk (792,100) were exchanged on Friday while BAT's total trade came more from 439,800 traded on Monday for Ksh 268m.

Traded value at the bond market was lower than previous week closing at Ksh 6.9bn compared to Ksh 10 bn previously.
