AS NIGERIA COMES TO A HALT FROM TOMORROW

From tomorrow, Thursday, September 27 2018 all activities throughout Nigeria may come to a halt if the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the organised labour  of Nigeria takes off as directed.

According to the Secretary General of the TUC, Comrade (Barr) Musa Lawal Ozigi, the strike was endorsed by the Central Working Committee of the the trade union at a meeting held on Monday, September 24.

The Organised labour had earlier issued an ultimatum to the government which expires today Wednesday for the resolution of dragging new minimum wage talks or face nationwide strike action.

The CWC, we understand, decided to call out workers on the strike because it could see any miracle that could be performed to set the new minimum wage before expiration of the deadline.

They argued that even if the government performs wonders and gets the negotiating committee to come up with a figure, the National Assembly will be able to turn into a new law on minimum wages since the Senate was yet to resume.

In an official letter as directed to state councils of the TUC, Musa Ozigi said mobilisation should begin immediately, and all workers and the public should stock up on provisions ready for an indefinite strike nationwide.

The state councils were also asked to set up State strike implementation committee comprising the TUC, Nigerian Labour Congress ULc and other stakeholders to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of the action.

The immediate impact of the strike action is obvious. Should it succeed, all government offices, business offices and public utilities like transportation will be closed or out of service.

Essential services may be open in the event they are excused from the strike.

In particular, the controversial Osun state rerun election ordered by the Independent Nigerian Election Commission, INEC, may certainly not hold and even court actions to stop it may not proceed as well since the law courts will be paralysed.

If health workers his the TUC call alongside electricity generation and distribution employees and oil and gas workers, then it will indeed be a total shut down with dire implications for all living, doing business with and otherwise relating with the country.

Perhaps it would be averted. Just perhaps.
