AUG 20, 2018: LAST WEEK AT NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE

At the Nairobi stock market last week ended Friday August 17, 2018 traded volume increased by 12.6% to 66.143m shares from 58.737m the previous week but traded value grew by 55.9% to Ksh 2.709bn from Ksh 1.737bn and number of deals struck increased  2.77% to 5840.

However, the All share index went down 0.14% to 173.51 mainly because of a major decline that occurred on Thursday when it closed at 173.95, from Wednesday's 174.71

It was more like down today, up tomorrow for the ASI through the week starting on Monday with decline to 173.51 from Friday's 174.84 followed by Tuesday's recovery to 174.48 then a breather to 174.71 on Wednesday before the plunge on Thursday.

The all decline would have been higher but for 0.64 points recovery on Friday even as price losers (17) outnumbered gainers (15).

The Friday growth in ASI was engendered by leading Ksh 3 per share rise in BOC Kenya's share price and endorsed as Safaricom closed Ksh 0.25 per share up while price losers were led by Ksh 3 per share drops recorded by Bamburi Cement and Williamson Tea.

Week high traded volume was hit on Tuesday as 20.801m shares changed hands followed by Wednesday with 16.358m shares and Thursday's 13.930m units. 

In terms of traded value however, top of the daily league was Thursday's Ksh812.724m followed by Tuesday with Ksh 686.824m and Wednesday with Ksh 567.002m.

The lower % growth in deals sealed was paced on Tuesday with 1321 deals with Thursday in tow (1243) followed by Friday with 1058 and Wednesday's 1052.

As usual Safaricom set the pace in traded volume and value closing the week with deals for a total of 25.9m shares worth Ksh 749m compared to Equity Group's 13.7m shares sold for Ksh 714m.

Trade at the Bond market was considerably lower with Ksh 6.5bn value recorded compared to Ksh 10.8bn the previous week.

KENYA AUCTIONS Ksh 13.84bn Treasury Bonds.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) will from Tuesday December 18 to 27th 2018_ auction Ksh 13.84bn worth of fixed income Treasury Bonds with issue date December 17, 2018. According to official statement from the Director of Financial Markets Irene Njiru on Monday December 17, auction will continue throughout the stated period or close once the target money to be raised is reached, whichever comes first. Bid value will be paid for at most by 2pm December 31, 2018 while auction results will be made public on December 28, 2018 after the scheduled closing date. The bonds are being issued at 12.502% fixed interest at an adjusted average price of Ksh 100.468 for Ksh 100 bond. However, price payable after auction results publication will be average of successful bid prices based and allotment will be on first come first served basis. NAIROBI SE's HIGH PRICED EQUITIES.

In the wake of Nigeria's high priced quoted companies posted in this blog a while ago, Henates took a look to at Nairobi Securities Exchange June 23 official list to identify its high priced equities and the outcome was interesting too. Of the 66 companies quoted on the market by June 23, 15 or 22.7% were valued averagely at above 30 times nominal value. A word of caution though: There are two clear differences between the Nigerian stock market list and that of Nairobi: In the Nigerian one most listed companies have par or nominal value of N0.50 as is there is an implied agreement on this. On the other hand, at Nairobi most of the equities do not share common par value, they differ greatly.
