MAY 22, 2018: ASI BACK UP AT NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE
The All share index at the Nairobi Securities Exchange May 22 2018 found its way back upwards with 0.42 points to 178.14.
Two days of increase had been punctuated on Monday May 21 with 1.83 points drop to 177.72 as Safaricom, down Ksh 0.25 per share paired with East African Breweries lead drop of Ksh 9 per share.
This time around, Safaricom regained its lost Ksh 0.25 per share and joined 13 other price gainers led by Total Kenya to prop up the ASI inspite of more number of equities with drops (23).
Total Kenya closed Ksh 2.50 per share up as it hit day high of Ksh 35 then low of Ksh 31.25 before closing at Ksh 34.50 per share compared to Monday's Ksh 32 per share with relatively few units changing hands.
Safaricom, on the other recorded deals for 7.749m shares worth Ksh 227m at between Ksh 29 and 29.75 while closing at Ksh 29.25 per share as against Ksh 29 previously.
East African Breweries was the other major price gainer as it rose by Ksh 2 pee share while witnessing deals for 176,300 units worth Ksh 41.8m.
However, price losers were not only more in number, but showcased higher spread. Lead drop, for example was recorded by British American Tobacco down Ksh 11 per share even with low trade.
It had closed Monday at Ksh 616 per share, touched day high of Ksh 610 and low of Ksh 601 before rallying a bit to close at Ksh 605 per share.
There were other major price drops too. Crown Paints went down Ksh 4.50 per share, and Diamond Trust Bank declined by Ksh 4 per share.
Indeed, construction and allied was more or bearish as, out of 5 price changes, 4 drops were recorded paced by Crown Paints; then trailed by Bamburi Cement and East African Portland, down Ksh 2 per share each and TPS Eastern which eased by Ksh 1.25 per share.
Traded volume for the day came to 28.27m shares up on 19.54m shares on Monday and Traded value too improved to Ksh 571.78m from Ksh 560.89m although number of deals declined to 1328 from 1339 on Monday.
Lead volume was recorded and rarely too, by Carbacid in the Manufacturing and allied sector with deals for 8.874m shares worth Ksh 97.6m with the price ranging between Ksh 11 and 12 per share.
Other top trades were in Kenya Power and Lighting, with deals for 3.8m shares worth Ksh 25m; Cooperative Bank in which 3.18m shares changed hands for Ksh 59m and KCB Group with deals for 1.112m units worth Ksh 52.8m.
At the bond market traded value came to Ksh 1.94bn in 71 deals compared to Ksh 2.21bn in 87 deals on Monday.
