DONT PANIC. YOU CAN IMPORT THESE ITEMS---CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) after being inundated with inquiries and complaints, has formally come out with a list of some 36 items you can access foreign exchange officially and import. They are items the public and official agencies were not sure could be imported and have been making repeated inquiries.

In a circular dated May 17 addressed to authorised dealers; the customs service and the public;  signed by W. D Gotring, Director Trade and exchange department, the CBN assured that the items were valid for foreign exchange and so should be given allocation when requested.

Of the 36 items, 7 covered coated and uncoated, paper; in rolls, paper board and kraft paper. They were all mentioned from group 5 to group 11.

Also featuring prominently were some items specifically for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. These items were mentioned in 8 groups and covered other plates; sheets, film, foil and strip of polymers; hygienic or pharmaceutical hardware; glass in bales, rods or tubes; float glass; bottles, flasks, ampoules etc stoppers, lids and other closure of glass and non domestic heating /cooking equipment, non-electric heaters; all specifically for the use of the pharmaceutical industry.

Nearer the home base, animal or vegetable fats; oils and fractions; hydrogenated but not including palm oil and Olein and margarine, also found space on the list.

Another popular group on the list were prepared glues and adhesives based on polymers of heading 39.01 or 39.13 on rubber.

Some items too for carpet backing were also on the list. These are gauze, other narrow fabrics, narrow fabric of heading 58.06 of polypropylene and fabrics of synthetic filament yarn including woven fabric obtained from materials and for carpet backing.

However, the list was dominated by polyester, yarns of nylon polyamides ; high tenacity of viscose rayon; untwisted or twisted (not exceeding 120 turns peer meter); synthetic staple fibres, synthetic filament tow; acrylic or non acrylic; multiple or cabled yarn and yarns of cellulose or acetate.
