LITERATE YOUNG WOMEN IN NIGERIA? WHERE TO LOOK, SAYS BUREAU OF STATISTICS.
Sometimes, the most useful data for a marketer of products and services is where to zero in on literate young women in a country like Nigeria.
They are ones who are already determining tomorrow's choices at the market for goods and services especially those targetted at children, families and mothers.
According to the National Bureau of statistics statistical report on women and men in Nigeria 2015 released recently, most of them are in southern states although northern states like Kogi,Benue, Plateau, Kwara, Taraba and Nasarawa host great numbers too.
According to the report, in 2015 the national average percentage of women aged 15 to 24 year who were literate was 66.7% with the lows and highs coming from north and south respectively.
The top ten states with highest percentage of literate young women was led by Rivers with 98.5%; followed by Enugu (97%); Imo (95.9%); Akwa Ibom (95%); and Delta with 94.1%.
Others were Anambra with 93.6%; Osun (93.3%); Ekiti (92.7%); Abia (91.3%) and Lagos with 90.3%.
Kogi state missed the top ten but its 89.5% was pace setter from a distance of sorts in the north although Edo with 89.9% still edged ahead and Cross River recorded 89.5% too.
Lowest ten amongst the 36 states plus Abuja was Sokoto with only 10.7% literate women aged between 15 and 24 years by 2015.
It was followed by Bauchi (13.6%); Yobe with 16.4%; Katsina (18.5%); Borno (21.2%); Kebbi (24.5%); Jigawa (29.8%); Gombe (35.2%), Zamfara (37.6%) and Niger state with 40.8%.
Every state down south had percentages above the national average while apart from Kogi, states like Benue (81.8%); Plateau (78.7%) and Kwara (72.2%) crossed this threshold in the north.
Two northern states missed the national average by a close call. Taraba had 66% while Narsarawa reported 63.8%.and thus counted among states with above 50% literacy amongst young women in 2015. Adamawa too with 59.4% was above 50%.
The southern state with lowest rate was Ogun with 80.9% thus ranking behind both Benue and Kogi states

ReplyDeleteNothing was said about language but I guess any one who can write a simple statement in native language like IBO or Hausa is literate. That's even more difficult than writing in English for example.
