NIGERIA YOUNGEST AMONG WORLD'S POPULOUS NATIONS
Nigeria has the youngest population amongst the world's top ten populous nations.
According to World Meter Info quoting estimate by the United Nations, the average or median age of Nigeria's estimated 187m people is 18.
It is in fact the only nation among the top ten that account for about 58.2% of the world population, with median age bow 20. And the population is estimated to be 2.5% of the world population.
This means in effect that youth unemployment which today is a major problem, is in fact just beginning because in the coming years, more and more will finish their schooling and join the labour force.
Of the top ten most populous nations, Pakistan, which at 6th is just ahead of Nigeria's 7th, came closest to Nigeria with median age of 23 years. Its own population is estimated to be 2.6% of the world.
Just below Nigeria at the 8th position in terms of estimated population was Bangladesh which has median age of 26 years for its 63.2m people making up 2.2% of world population.
The world's two most populous nations were India and China. India is the second largest in the world after China. It is home to about 1326.8m people whose median age is 27 years and they make up 17.9% of the world population.
Mexico has the same average or median age with India but with a population of 69.9m, it is 10th most populous nation and hosts 1.7% of the world.
Indonesia is the only other country amongst the top ten by population with median age below 30. Its own was estimated at 28 years for its 260.6m citizens.
The rest four have median age above 30. Brazil, for example, that ranks 5th with an estimated population of 209.6m has median age of 31 years; followed by China, home to the world's 18.7% or about 1385.4m, with median age of 37.
The two super powers of yore, America and Russia have median of 38 and 39 years respectively. Of course, the United States of America is the world's third most populous nation with about 324m people with Russia, at the 9th position has 143.4m or 1.9% of the world within its borders.
Nigeria was the only African country amongst the top ten by population but DR Congo, with 79.7m people has a lower median age of 17 years.

Sorry, Nigeria's population was earlier erroneously put at 97.2m. It is about 187m and has been corrected as above in the post. 97.2m is for its internet users. A mix up indeed.
