AT LAST, TIME TO ROLL UP SLEEVES.
Alas, the Nigerian organised labour was unable to ground Nigeria the way many had feared and indeed, in line wity past nation wide strike actions decided on since the birth of the Nigerian nation.
Compliance was at best partial even from the first day, not to talk of the next day when many banks in particular were bold enough to open for business.
Some government offices were closed on the first day but certainly not federal government offices nor were those that were closed or remained open did so along political party lines.
Different analysts have attributed this historic demystification of organised labours muscle in Nigeria to the existence of two factions of the movement hitherto while others attribute it to realities on the ground given track record of events and promises since the battle for deregulation of the downstream sector of the all important oil industry began.
Naturally, the Buhari administration can also claim responsibility for the turn of events since Wednesday.
Fortunately, none of these is important enough to be the focus of the nation as organised labour leaks its wounded ego and relevance.
The real issue is simple: Nigeria and Nigerians, by the Grace of God, have crossed yet another hurdle yet this particular hurdle demands the kind of sacrifice the majority never envisaged with Buhari and his heaven promising party.
So on all sides and citizens, the real work has just begun and it is time to roll up sleeves for real.
On the part of government production or value added related way must be found and implemented to cut short the time span of the pains ahead to the barest minimum and not by conjuring palliatives to ease the pain and once again encourage Nigerians to go to into reverie of ignorance about the economic realities facing the nation.
New refineries must be brought on stream soonest possible, consumer goods production, particularly the food related ones must be stepped through production cost reduction incentives and a longer term wholesome view of today's hydra headed economic monster confronting the nation be fashioned and set in motion.
It is needless telling President Buhari that travelling the globe with a begging bowl and speeches intended to engender sympathy for Nigeria and indeed, his presidency is not the way out. It could help but no one opts to be crazy simply because it helps at times.
Foreign exchange allocation helps too in the situation Nigeria is in especially allocation of the transparent and judicious type but again, it can only help for a while but it contains not the real solution.
The same with all wars against corruption, sectional militancy, and violent clashes of economic interests. They will help but again the real way out of the current realities lies somewhere else.
It lies simply in determined and coordinated efforts to increase Nigerian value added in all industries, increase Nigerian scientific research inputs towards this and educating the Nigerian populace on the evils of parasitism of whatever kind and group while ensuring no sacrifice by any body or group towards the common good is unrewarded.
Simple to say but tough to stay focused in Nigeria but there is no other option. Even infrastructure development and repairs can only have relevance from the drive for more value added.
