JAN 21, 2019: NAIROBI: STILL WAXING STRONGER

The upbeat at the Nairobi stock market continued on Monday January 21 2019 with the All share index closing up 0.37 points to 145.64 even though there were equal number of price losers and gainers.

What was obvious of course was that there higher margin of gains although Safaricom was part of the price losers 

Leading the price gains was Jubilee Holdings in the Insurance sector with Ksh 4.25 per share top up as it closed at Ksh 435.25 after hitting day high of Ksh 435 and low of Ksh 425 compared to Ksh 430 per share on Friday.

It was trailed by Williamson Tea up Ksh 2.75 per share; KCB Group with Ksh 1.90 per share increase and Car & General which ended up by Ksh 1.45 per share.

In contrast, only Nation Media declined by above Ksh 1 per share. It hit day high of Ksh 63 per share, then a low of Ksh 59 before closing at Ksh 60 compared to Ksh 62.75 per share on Friday.

Closest to it were Ksh 0.50 per share drops by the pair of Standard Chartered Bank and Nairobi Securities Exchange itself and Safaricom's Ksh 0.20 per share down offered some support.

Traded volume went down slightly to 30.942m shares from 33.822m on Friday dragging traded value down to Ksh 784.442m from Ksh 893.146m. Number of deals struck did not head down though closing at 1175 as against 1046 on Friday.

Safaricom paced volume and value with deals for 20.871m shares worth Ksh 490m or 62.54% of tota. The shares were traded at between Ksh 23.05 and 23.70 per share.

The banking sector ended with Ksh 260m traded value or 33.21% with KCB Group leading with deals for 4.306m shares worth Ksh 175m at between Ksh 39.15 and 41 per share.

Equity Group too chipped a bit with 1.597m of its shares traded for Ksh 9m while closing Ksh 1.90 or 3.18% per share.

Kenya Power and Lighting was the other equity with above 1m shares volume. A total of 1.409m of its shares were traded at between Ksh 4.01 and 4.50 per share for Ksh 6m total worth.

At the bond market, traded value closed at Ksh 1.6 bn, not quite a flying start to the new week.
