SEPT 22, 2018: LAST WEEK AT NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE

Last week ended Friday September 21 2018, at Nairobi Stock Market most price changes headed downwards and so the All share index declined by 7.99% or 12.64 points to 145.49 from previous Friday's 158.13.

The ASI dropped each day of the week except Tuesday. It started down on Monday to 157.57 then recovered very marginally to 157.75 on Tuesday.

Then the daily slide began in earnest , diving to 155.86 by Wednesday then hitting 148.52 on Thursday before the Friday close.

It was a week of high margin drops led by Ksh 68 per share decline in share price of Kenya Orchards on Tuesday followed by daily drop except on Tuesday by East African Breweries that accumulated to Ksh 15 per share decline.

Bamburi Cement too recorded price changes in 4 of the 5 trading days closing up Ksh 1 per share only on Wednesday and going the rest of the days for a net all week drop of Ksh 14 per share

BOC Kenya went down by Ksh 11.50 per share in 2 price active days Wednesday and Friday while Diamond Trust Bank declined by Ksh 9 per share from price drops in all days except Wednesday.

Many equities were active up and down through the week and so ended with marginal drops like Standard Chartered Bank active price wise through and week but ended only Ksh 4 per share down and Jubilee Holdings which lost Ksh 33 per share on Tuesday and promptly regained same amount on Wednesday.

The major price gain for the week was recorded by Williamson Tea up Ksh 7 per share after rallying Ksh 10 per share on Friday to cancel Ksh 3 per share drop on Wednesday.

Trading was up though with traded volume closing at 103.715m shares in 6268 deals worth Ksh Ksh 2.743bn compared to 89.317m shares in 6127 deals worth Ksh 2.566bn the previous week.

Top trade was recorded by Safaricom as 50.5m shares changed hands for Ksh 1.28bn at between Ksh 23.75 and 27.25 per share. Actually, Safaricom was very much part of the ASI pressure downwards through the week as it dropped four times in the 5 day week.

In terms of volume, Barclay's Bank trailed Safaricom with 10.5m shares but worth only 5th ranked Ksh 0.107bn. It was Equity Group that followed in value terms with Ksh 0.404bn realised from sale of 4th ranked 9.8m shares.

Others that made top 5 by value were KCB Group (Ksh 0.392bn); and East African Breweries (Ksh 0.162bn) while in terms of volume, others were KCB Group (9.9m) and Kenya Power and Lighting with 4.2m shares exchanged for value that did not make the top 5.

At the bond market, Ksh 10bn was recorded as traded value, compared to Ksh 6.97bn the previous week.
