AUG. 11, 2018: LAST WEEK : ALL SHARE INDEX YEAR LOW AT NIGERIAN SE

At the Nigerian Stock exchange last week, the All share index closed at the lowest level in more than a year reflecting 5 days of continuous decline as bears reign supreme through the week.

The ASI closed at 35,446.47, down 2.17% on Friday which also amounted to 2.89% drop on previous Friday's 36,499.67.

Indeed, it had been quite a long time the ASI touched 35,000 range in this way after rather giddy start to the year that the index hitting above 45,000 mid January.

It crossed into 36,000 range in July last year and since then until now only struggled to stay within this range in recent months.

The dive was a real plunge on Friday mainly because top capitalised Dangote Cement paced 25 price drops with N14 or 6.14% per share decline to record 28 deals for 0.047m shares worth N10.399m.

Other major  Friday pressures on the ASI came from Total Nigeria's N5 or 2.63% per share decline; La Africa's N1.9 or 6.35% per share drop; N1.7 or 10 % per share decrease by GlaxoSmithKline and Ecobank Transnational's N1.1 or 4.97% per share drop.

The 14 price gains recorded for the day were no match for the drops. The pack was paced by 11 Plc up N6 of 3.53% per share as it recorded 21 deals for 0.047m shares worth N8.324m.

It was indeed a low trade week compared to the levels recorded in the previous week.

Traded volume dropped by 33.5% to 925.62m shares from 1391.43m; and traded value tumbled by 58.9% to N8,333.24m from previous week's N20,285.97m mainly as deals in low priced shares dominated and total number of deals struck within the week shed 22.4% to 15,565.

Top daily volume was recorded on Tuesday August 7 (248.046m)  followed by Friday's 192.995m while Wednesday's 114.037m was the low point.

Tuesday too led both traded value and number of deals  but Monday figures for them pushed Friday data to 3rd place on both accounts while Wednesday remain all week bottom.

It was indeed a week of major tumbles with Seplat Petroleum topping with N60 per share drop followed by Dangote Cement down N15 per share and Total Nigeria with N7.80 per share drop.
