THE LADY WITH THE BIG STICK AT NIGERIAN STOCK EXCHANGE

With the formal approval of ultimate capital market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission, a lady has been appointed to wield the big stick at the Nigerian stock exchange.

She is Ms Tinuade Awe the erstwhile general manager Regulation and general counsel, who has been appointed executive director Regulation with effect from January 1, this year.

As ED she is in charge of broker regulation; market surveillance and investigations and regulatory technology.

Hitherto, she had responsibility for some of these functions as general manager but not as executive director. Besides she now wears expanded shoes in view of restructuring needed after two EDs: Ade Bajomo and Haruna Jalo-Waziri left in the twilight of last year.

Says President of NSE council, Mr Abimbola Ogubanjo of her appointment: " Am proud that the national council has recognised Tinuade for the exemplary role she played in transforming the legal and regulation landscape of the exchange "

She brings to bear involvement with the exchange since 2011 crowned with formal engagement as top member of the executive committee in 2012.

She holds LLB from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife; LLM from Harvard and has been admitted to both the Nigerian and New York Bar. She was the best overall graduating student at the Nigerian law school in her time.

Her boss, the Chief executive officer of the NSE, Oscar Onyema looks forward to working with to position the exchange for the " 4th industrial revolution ".

But all said and done, Tinuade is close enough to the very top to remind one of the time when the first Lady ever, Dr Mrs Okereke Onyuike piloted the market as director general.

Besides, just as fear of SEC in the industry confers some degree of wisdom, fear of Ms Tinuade Awe from now on could be the beginning of wisdom for stock brokers and quoted companies.
