JULY 17, 2017: SAFARICOM & KCB DOMINATE AT NAIROBI SE
Today, Monday July 17, 2017 trading at the Nairobi securities exchange dominated by Safaricom and KCB group leading to 36.5% rise in value to Kes 1.164bn and in traded volume by 28.8% to 43m.
There was marginal drop in deals recorded though at 1421, down 1.39% from Friday close and All shares index continued to climb slowly by 0.33% to 153.63.
Safaricom recorded the highest traded volume and value with deals for 19.3m shares at between 23 and 23.5 Kes per share valued at 444m Kes.
In view of trading in higher priced equities, the 44.9% of volume thus accounted for Safaricom, came to only 38.1% of traded value.
On the other hand, KCB group witnessed deals 8.965m, that is less than 50% of Safaricom volume but valued at Kes 358m. The shares were sold at between 39.50 and 40 Kes per share.
It thus drove the banking sector to contribute 582m Kes or 50.02% to traded value. Equity group had a strong in this though as it recorded deals for 4.159m shares worth Kes 161m while gaining 0.75kes to close at 38.75 Kes per share.
Cooperative bank too witnessed deals for above 1m units (1.767m units) worth 25.6m Kes.
In all therethere were 7 equities with deals for above the 1m mark. Apart from Safaricom, KCB, Equity group and Cooperative bank, Umeme ltd, the Ugandan company, hit a 12 month low at 12.20 Kes per share and recorded deals for 2.012m units worth 24.5m Kes.
In the same Energy and Power sector, Kenya Power also recorded deals for 1.2m units worth 9.7m Kes and so, the sector ended accounting for 38m Kes or 3.27% of traded value.
This contribution was lower that chipped in by Manufacturing and Allied where British American Tobacco and East African Breweries, two high priced equities, recorded deals.
The sector contributed 73m or 6.30% to trades value as BAT witnessed deals for 57,500 shares worth 46m Kes and EAB recorded deals for 107,700 shares worth 26.9m Kes after gaining Kes 1.
The bond market was relatively quiet as only Kes 1.19bn worth were traded in 37 deals, one less than Friday's number of deals.
