TOUGH TIMES? MORE NIGERIANS BECOMING DRIVERS

Companies and individuals with goods and services targetted at drivers, are in for better opportunities in today's Nigeria. Reason? More Nigerians are becoming drivers.
According to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics,  the growth in driver's license issued in the last two years has been outstanding.
In 2013 a total of 395,539 such licenses were issued nationwide but come 2015 the figure had almost tripled to 1,151,906.
In 2014 the growth recorded year on year was 65.1% then 2015 topped up on 2014's 653,046 by 76.4%.
Of course Lagos state accounted for the highest number each year with its share standing at 298,319 in 2015.
However, very many other States are catching up fast especially in 2015 leaving Lagos with shrinking percentage shares. In 2014 the states share increased to 34.4% from 2013's 31.4% then fell sharply to 25.9% in 2015.
On the other hand, top catch up growth in 2015 was Gombe state's 838.1% increase from 2014's 3337 licenses to 31,303 in 2015. Its 2014 growth was only 23.6%.
This was followed by Sokoto state's 450.9% increase from 2014's 4022 issued driver's licenses to 22,156 after 68.7% rise in 2014 on 2013's 2384.
Also catching up fast was Nasarawa state with 32293 issued driver's licenses in 2015, up 419.3% on 2014's 6218 which was itself 115.5% increase on 2013:s 2886.
Taraba state recovered strongly in this regard in 2015 after 2014's 27.5% drop to only 1876 licenses. The 2015 figure came to 5821, up 210.3%. But certainly, it is a recovery from a very comparative low.
Other states that recorded above 100% increase in issued driver's licenses include Kano, Kebbi, Delta, Abia, Kaduna, Osun, IMO and Akwa Ibom.
Three of them, Akwa Ibom, Delta and Abia had earlier also recorded above 100% growth in 2014. Akwa Ibom's was 366.3% growth in 2014 to 8804 licenses before rising 100.2% to 17623 by 2015.
Delta increased by 289.8% in 2014 to 24817 licenses before adding 159.8% to end 2015 with 64482 licenses.
In the case of Abia, the growth in 2014 was 114% to 6859 before topping with 147.4% to 36316.
From the figures, Abuja recorded only 28% increase in 2014 to 54532 and 96.1% rise in 2015 to 106946.
It thus still retained second position in terms of actual number of licenses issued after Lagos state but Delta state was now closing in very fast.
